Psyllium husk — known across India and the Gulf as Isabgol or Isphagula — is one of those products where nearly every buyer asks the same handful of questions before their first order. Here are the straight answers, aimed at importers in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the wider Gulf region.
Why does almost everyone source psyllium husk from India?
Because that’s where nearly all of it is grown and processed. India accounts for roughly 80–90% of global psyllium production, concentrated mainly in Gujarat and Rajasthan, and exports the large majority of what it grows. If you’re buying psyllium husk anywhere in the world, there’s a good chance it either came from India directly or was re-exported by someone who bought it from India first.
What grades are actually available?
The main distinction is purity. Export-grade husk is processed to remove the seed entirely, leaving only the fibrous outer coating, and is typically supplied at 95% and 99% purity. Purity affects two things buyers care about most: colour (higher purity runs paler and more uniform) and swelling index — the volume the husk expands to when it absorbs water, which is the property that matters most for both pharmaceutical and dietary fibre applications. Is it sold as husk, powder, or whole seed?
All three exist, and it depends on your end use. Whole husk (sometimes called flakes) is standard for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical manufacturing. Psyllium husk powder — the husk milled to a finer, more uniform particle size — is common in food and beverage applications where quick dispersion matters. How is it packaged for export?
Standard export packing is in multi-layer paper or PP bags of 25 kg or 50 kg, with an inner moisture-barrier liner — important for a hygroscopic product travelling through Gulf humidity and heat. What certifications should I ask for?
At minimum: a certificate of analysis for each batch (purity, swelling index, moisture, foreign matter), and confirmation of FSSAI compliance from the exporter.
